On Thursday, 29 January 2026, the Brussels Energy Club held a high-level, in-person discussion in Brussels examining the evolution of Europe’s energy markets over the past decade and the challenges that lie ahead.
The session, titled “Reflecting on ten years of Europe’s energy markets – from where we were to where we will be,” took place at TUSIAD and was followed by a networking lunch. It brought together members and guests for an open and constructive exchange on how European energy markets have adapted since the Paris Agreement in 2015 and what the next ten years may hold.
The discussion featured Giles Dickson, former CEO of WindEurope, as the VIP guest speaker. Drawing on more than a decade at the centre of European energy policymaking, Giles Dickson offered a candid assessment of market developments, policy incentives, and the evolving role of renewables, while also addressing ongoing challenges related to energy security, demand growth, and import dependence.
While renewable energy and lower-emission technologies have become far more mainstream than a decade ago, the discussion acknowledged that fossil fuels remain a key component of Europe’s energy supply. Participants reflected on whether current policy frameworks are sufficient to attract long-term investment, the prospects for greater European energy independence, and the extent to which renewables can realistically underpin Europe’s energy economy through the 2030s.
The session was introduced and moderated by Dr Marat Terterov, Principal Representative of the Brussels Energy Club, who guided a frank and forward-looking discussion that encouraged active participation and critical debate.
The Brussels Energy Club thanks all participants and speakers for contributing to a thoughtful and engaging exchange on one of Europe’s most pressing strategic challenges.
